Centuries of Crossings

If the thought of a ferry crossing the river Mersey instantly makes you think of that famous pop song by Gerry & The Pacemakers, you could be forgiven for thinking that this popular passenger service has only existed since the 1960’s, when the song reached the top 10 in the UK.

The staggering truth is that there have been ferries crossing the river - which sits between the city of Liverpool and the Wirral peninsular - since the 12th century, when monks from Birkenhead Priory would transport people to the citys markets.

The service has since gone from strength to strength and remains popular with residents and tourists alike.
